Under cloudless skies at Camelback Ranch, the Los Angeles Dodgers finally won a spring training game when they beat the Cleveland Guardians formerly known as Indians 6-to-2.
Before the game, the Dodgers designated Matt Beaty for assignment. Although Beaty is a wonderful left-handed hitter, his defensive abilities are limited to first base. The Dodgers want a more versatile player off the bench than Beaty can give them. They needed to make room for utility fielder Hanser Alberto. The right-handed hitter who has played for the Texas Rangers, the Kansas City Royals, and the Baltimore Orioles signed a one-year $1.6 million deal with a club option. According to manager Dave Roberts, Alberto is a “really good defender.”
The Dodgers’ biggest goal of this spring training appears to have a stronger bench than they did during the 2021 season. They have signed both Jake Lamb, who had three hits Wednesday, and Kevin Pillar to Minor League contracts. After having season-ending shoulder surgery last May, Edwin Ríos hopes to return as a backup first and third baseman. Gavin Lux, who homered Wednesday, is trying to make himself into a super-utility man.
Clayton Kershaw made his second start of the spring. While he allowed two runs in 2.2 innings, he struck out four. Both Justin Bruihl and Blake Treinen, who is the probable closer for the Dodgers, were impressive.

Yesterday, Major League Baseball decided to have twenty-eight players on rosters for the first month of the regular season. Moreover, they will keep the ghost runner on second base throughout the 2022 season.
