The Los Angeles Dodgers completed the sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a rain-shortened 6-to-3 victory.
It has been well-documented that Mookie Betts has struggled in 2021. Although it has not been well-publicized, Betts has played with nagging injuries throughout this season. Knowing the Dodgers needed him with many injuries namely Cody Bellinger and Corey Seager, Betts has played through the pain with a stiff back and a sore triceps after being hit by a fastball.
These nagging injuries, despite not been bad enough to be on the IL, have affected his play even though Betts will never make excuses for his subpar play. However, Thursday, Betts had a lead-off home run, a walk, and a single. He made a fantastic defensive play that prevented the Pirates from scoring a run.
Julio Urìas, Zach McKinstry, and Justin Turner had RBI.
Although Urìas did not dominate the Pirates as he normally would, he gave the Dodgers what they needed after yesterday’s bullpen game. Dave Roberts thought Tony Gonsolin would pitch longer than 1.2 innings Wednesday, but Gonsolin’s control was awful, walking five. The Pirates were not baffled by Urìas’ fastball, so he relied on his slurve and changeup.
