Since his 2019 MVP season, Cody Bellinger’s offensive production has disappointed everybody. While Bellinger has toiled hard to improve his offense, his elite defense in center field has been a constant. During the 2022 NLDS against the San Diego Padres, Dave Roberts sat Bellinger for Game 3 and 4, and it hurt the Dodger defense. Many Dodger fans do not want their favorite team to offer Bellinger arbitration, but the Dodgers need to retain Bellinger for their run prevention.

Since Bellinger has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in April 2017, his supreme defense at first base, and in either right or center field. In 2019, Bellinger won a Gold Glove for his right field defense. When the Dodgers did not have Bellinger in center field, they did not prevent runs as good as they did with Bellinger, and during the postseason, run prevention during the playoffs is crucial.

Bellinger adds a spark to the lineup even though his offensive production has been horrible since the beginning of the 2020 season. Bellinger is a hard worker, and he likes to tinker with his batting stance. At no time during the last two years, Bellinger has been comfortable at the plate. In 2022, Bellinger hit .210 with 19 homers.

With Bellinger entering into his free agent year, he will figure out what he needs to do to improve his offense. The Dodgers need his supreme defense and spirit.
