On a hot Tuesday evening at Great American Ball Park, the Los Angeles Dodgers spanked the Cincinnati Reds 8-to-2.

Since the Dodgers needed a right-handed hitting outfielder when Mookie Betts with a fractured rib is on the IL, the Dodgers acquired their old friend Trayce Thompson from the Detroit Tigers for cash considerations. In 2022, Thompson has spent time with the San Diego Padres and the Tigers franchises. In the Minor Leagues, he has blasted 14 home runs. The Dodgers hope Thompson will add much-needed right-handed power. To make room on the active roster, the Dodgers put Caleb Ferguson with forearm tendonitis on the IL

Although Tony Gonsolin did not have his best stuff working, he earned the Major League-leading ninth win. He pitched five innings and allowed two solo home runs. His fastball did not have its normal life, but his slider was brilliant. This start showed Gonsolin’s newfound maturity. Since he already has pitched career-high innings, manager Dave Roberts is trying to preserve Gonsolin’s energy.

The Dodger bullpen of Evan Phillips, Phil Bickford, Brusdar Graterol, and David Price were brilliant.

During June, Freddie Freeman has struggled with a .258 batting average, but on Tuesday, he had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in five runs. For the first time as a Dodger, Trea Turner had four hits. Will Smith homered. In the second, the Dodgers finally manufactured a run when Justin Turner doubled, was sacrificed to third by Eddy Alvarez, and scored on Gavin Lux.
