Sunday, the National League All-Star team was announced. While the Dodgers have four representatives, they have three players who were snubbed. Both Mookie Betts and Trea Turner will start the All-Star Game, and Tony Gonsolin and Clayton Kershaw were named.

Betts is having a phenomenal season despite missing 15 days because of a fractured rib. His twenty home runs lead the Dodgers in power. His .341 on-base percentage is excellent. While Betts’ above-average offense helps the Dodgers to win many games, his defense in the right field has prevented many runs from scoring. He is the catalyst of the Dodgers.

Playing in his contract year, Trea Turner has been an offensive force for the Dodgers. His .301 batting average is the nineteenth highest in the Major Leagues. He has eleven home runs, but his amazing speed and sliding ability put him in the All-Star Game. Although Turner is playing his natural position shortstop, his defense has not been spectacular.

This is the first time since 1980, the last time that the All-Star Game was held at Dodger Stadium, that the Dodgers have had two starters.

Gonsolin’s splendid performance in the 2022 season has surprised most baseball-knowledgeable people, but he has dominated the opponents since his Major-League debut in June 2019. Only a few Major-League pitchers throw a splitter anymore, but Gonsolin’s splitter along with his slider fools the opposition. His eleven victories lead the National League in wins. His 1.62 ERA is the lowest in the Major Leagues. Although baseball-knowledgeable people think Gonsolin deserves to be the National League starter, I want his teammate Kershaw to be the starter for the National League.

Making his ninth National League All-Star team, Kershaw has rebounded from his first forearm injury during his 15-year Major-League career outstandingly. Although he missed a month with an inflamed SI joint, he has a 6-2 record with a 2.40 ERA. He has had only one bad start, which occurred in Colorado. In his first start of the 2022 season, he pitched seven no-hit innings. When he was the most dominant, he could not start the All-Star Game because the hometown stadium was hosting the All-Star Game. The future Hall of Famer needs and deserves the honor to be an All-Star starter.

Both Will Smith and Freddie Freeman should be named to the 2022 National League All-Star team. Both have played crucial roles on the Dodgers, whose record is the best in the National League by three and a half games. It seems whenever the Dodgers need to score a run; either Smith or Freeman delivers. Both are having great defensive years. They should be rewarded.
