A few hours before his ninth Opening Day start, left-hander Clayton Kershaw with back stiffness was scratched. The Dodgers put Kershaw on the Injury List. Although the Dodgers did not think Kershaw’s injury is not serious, they want to err on caution.

For the first time since 1981, the Dodgers have a rookie Dustin May to start against the San Francisco Giants. Even though the Dodgers thought May would contribute to the team during the 2020 season, they optioned May to the USC field. Now, May will follow Fernando Valenzuela’s footsteps when he shutout the Houston Astros in April 1981.

Kershaw has had back problems since 2014. Those back problems have hampered his performance. His velocity has decreased. Hopefully, Kershaw will be able to pitch sometime in the 2020 season.
