On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, for the first time in the 2022 season, the Los Angeles Dodgers had a walk-off win when they defeated the hot Philadelphia Phillies 5-to-4. The Dodgers avoided the four-game sweep by the Phillies, and they snapped their four-game losing streak.

Since the Dodger starting rotation has been tested with both Clayton Kershaw and Andrew Heaney on the IL and the Dodgers have been playing many consecutive games, they promoted Michael Groves from Double-A. They also promoted Shane Greene who pitched well on Sunday. To make room on the roster, the Dodgers optioned both Reyes Moronta and Garrett Cleavinger to Triple-A. On Saturday both Moronta and Cleavinger stopped the Philly offense

Groves pitched brilliantly in his Major-League debut, but a Gavin Lux two-base undermined his great debut. In his 3.2 innings, the four unearned runs marred Groves’ outing where he showcased his polished fastball and breaking balls. Unusual for a rookie, he had good control.

Despite having a four-run deficit, the Dodger offense never seemed panicked as they began chipping away at the deficit. In the third, after having a slow start, Mookie Betts blasted his team-leading home run. In the fourth inning, the slumping Max Muncy singled in Trea Turner. In the eighth, after a walk to Lux, he scored on Betts’ double. After Cody Bellinger tripled and Chris Taylor walked, for the first time in his life, Lux had a walk-off two-run double. Many Dodger fans wanted to release Lux whose inexperience frequently leads to defensive errors, but without Lux, the Dodgers might not have won the game.
