Monday, Max Muncy signed a one-year contract extension for $13.5 million with a club option for 2024.

Before becoming a Dodger, Muncy was sitting on his couch contemplating returning to Baylor University to finish his degree. The Oakland Athletics had released him after not giving him ample playing time to playing time to prove himself as a Major Leaguer.

Ever since Muncy has become a Dodger, he has been a mainstay in the middle of the Dodger lineup. During 2018, 2019, and 2021 seasons, he hit at least 35 home runs. He has an excellent eye at the plate, resulting in many walks. As a Dodger, Muncy’s defense at first, second, and third base has drastically improved.

On the last day of the 2021 regular season, while playing Gold Glove-caliber first base, Muncy dislocated his elbow and tore his UCL. His absence during the 2021 postseason arguably caused the Dodgers not to repeat as world champions.

This season has been a struggle for Muncy who has been still recovering from a major injury. For most of the season, Muncy has lacked his customary power. He was tentative at the plate. Despite his offensive problems, Muncy, who was displaced by Freddie Freeman, has played spectacular defense at both second and third base.

After a simple swing alteration while in Colorado, Muncy has become an offensive force. During August, he has hit .328 with 7 homers. Muncy’s elbow has finally healed. Barring another injury, Muncy should contribute greatly to the offense for the rest of the season and postseason. Muncy should have a valued member of the 2023 Dodgers.
