The Los Angeles Dodgers finished their nine-game homestand with eight victories and one loss when Thursday they inched out the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-to-2.
Thursday was a bullpen day since the Dodgers do not have a fifth starter yet after Dustin May’s season ended with Tommy John surgery. While David Price has been a starter for most of his fabulous Major-League career, this season he has been a reliever, so he has not built up sufficient arm strength to be a traditional starter. Thursday he started and went two scoreless innings. Alex Vesia hurled a brilliant inning. The only Dodger reliever who struggled Thursday was Joe Kelly who allowed a two-run homer to Eduardo Escobar, who has had a fantastic series against the Dodgers. Then, Victor Gonzàlez, Blake Treinen, and Kenley Jansen pitched perfectly.
Albert Pujols hit his first home run as a Dodger, a two-run shot. Will Smith hit the game-winning home run.
