On a beautiful Monday night at PNC Park, the Los Angeles Dodgers snapped their 6-game winning streak when they lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-to-1.
Although Julio Urías did not have his best stuff working, he pitched well enough to win. In his six-plus innings, he allowed two runs. The Dodger bullpen normally pitches well, but tonight, Phil Bickford and Robbie Erlin allowed three runs.
Monday, for the first time this season, the Dodgers seemed overmatched offensively. Many times, the Dodgers hit the ball incredibly hard, but they hit where the Pirates were positioned. If Edwin Ríos did not homer, the Pirates would have been shut out.
Again, the baseball did not fly properly. When a player hits a ball 102 miles per hour, he should have at least a hit. In the past, when a player hit the ball that hard, he used to have at least a double. Now, the ball dies on the warning track, frustrating everyone, except the pitcher. Deadening the ball does not make sense when Major League Baseball wants to increase action. Although the home run does not produce a prolonged excitement, it does create a spurt of excitement. Everyone who likes baseball enjoys watching the baseball soaring the ball over the fence.
Chris Taylor fouled a ball off inside of his knee. The tests showed no fracture, but he will not play tomorrow.
Last week Victor González underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery. After a promising spring training performance after a disappointing 2021 season, González had an inflamed elbow. Prior to his debut in the Major Leagues during the abbreviated 2020 season, he had Tommy John surgery. The Dodgers do not think González will return in the 2022 season.
The Dodgers wanted Blake Treinen to play an integral role in their bullpen. As a Dodger, Treinen had been a superior reliever. This season his velocity and movement on his pitches were not the same as in the past. Although he has not undergone an MRI, he has been diagnosed with shoulder inflammation. He is not throwing yet. The Dodgers do not expect Treinen to return until after the All-Star break.
