On Dave Roberts’ fiftieth birthday, the Los Angeles Dodgers did not gift their manager a victory. The Dodgers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-to-3.

Julio Urías, whose velocity is much lower than it was during the 2021 season, tried to pitch up in the strike zone and failed. Baseball modern analytics want pitchers to place their throws high in the strike zone, but when a hurler does not have good velocity, he cannot get outs. Urías allowed a pair of two-run homers. Although he went six innings, he lost his fifth game of the season.

Both Brusdar Graterol and David Price, who allowed a run in the ninth, pitched well.

The Pirates’ pitching staff stymied the hot Dodger offense. Trea Turner blasted a two-run homer. Justin Turner scored on a wild pitch.
