Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers placed Blake Treinen on the ten-day IL. The Dodger bullpen is one of the strengths, but the Dodger bullpen will be weak without having Treinen.

Treinen, 33, has a shoulder injury, but the Dodgers hope his injury is not serious. He is the reliever who gets the best opposing hitters in crucial times of the game. Before the Dodgers traded for Craig Kimbrel so that he can be the Dodger closer, many Dodger fans wanted Treinen to close games for the Dodgers.

Manager Dave Roberts likes to use Treinen in crucial game situations. Most Major Leaguers find Treinen’s slider unhittable. When healthy, he is one of the most dominating relievers in Major League Baseball.

In foresight, the Dodgers collected many dominating relievers. They knew the abbreviated spring training because of the lockout could make their pitchers suffer injuries. Unlike in the past, baseball puts more reliance on relievers than starters. While the starters pitch at most six innings a game, the relievers have been seeing more action since the 1990s. Sometimes, teams have bullpen games to preserve their starting rotations, particularly when they have an injury to a starter.

During the 2021 postseason, the Dodgers demonstrated their pitching staff was exhausted. Thus, President Andrew Friedman signed right-handed reliever Daniel Hudson to a one-year contract. Since Hudson closed out the 2019 World Series for the Washington Nationals, he is accustomed to performing under pressure. So far this season, he has not allowed a run in 3.2 innings. Roberts figures to use Hudson in high leverage situations as he did with Treinen.

Both Brusdar Graterol and Evan Phillips have impressed this season. Graterol has a new cutter with hopes of getting more strikeouts. Although he allowed two inherited runners to score on Tuesday, he has been fantastic with a new level of maturity. Phillips has proven he belongs in the Major Leagues.

Phil Bickford just returned from the IL. In 2021, he was a surprising mainstay of the Dodger bullpen, and the Dodgers hope he will regain his dominance after a slow spring training. Soon, Victor González should return from the IL with elbow inflammation.

Although the Dodgers will miss Treinen, they should be fine in the bullpen. Hopefully, he will return soon.
