On a hot Friday night at Dodger Stadium, with twenty games to play in the regular season, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 3-to-0. They remained 2½ games behind the San Francisco Giants.
In hopes of generating more offense for the remainder of the season, Dodger manager Dave Roberts announced no more scheduled off days for the regulars. Moreover, he benched the slumping Cody Bellinger to play the newly promoted Gavin Lux in left field. He decided to bat Mookie Betts in leadoff, a position where Betts is more comfortable than anywhere else in the lineup. The Dodgers also promoted Matt Beaty.
Julio Urìas pitched seven magnificent innings to earn his Major-League leading seventeen win. He mowed down the Padres with his excellent control. For the first time since early June, Urìas’ ERA fell below 3.00. Both Blake Treinen and Kenley Jansen pitched with excellence.
Max Muncy hit a two-run homer, and Chris Taylor had a sacrifice fly.
